ASAE honored the program, which in its first year awarded $250,000 in grants to 14 organizations across the United States and hosted a volunteer day for association members to help out in their communities.

In addition to the creation of a foundation, Specialty Food Association has long-established Fancy Food Show exhibitor donation programs where exhibitors can opt to donate food at the end of the trade show to a partner charity. The association donates as well and has an internal team to organize employee volunteering and charity drives.

“Congratulations to the Specialty Food Association for helping make the world a better place,” said Hugh “Mac” Cannon, MPA, CAE, Executive Director of ACEC of Metropolitan Washington, and chair of the Power of A Awards Judging Committee. “Their program exemplifies how associations make a difference every day – not just to the industry or profession they represent, but to society at large.”

The Specialty Food Association’s initiative is enriching lives by harnessing the collective power of its membership to combat hunger and food waste. Exhibitor food donations from the Winter 2014 Show totaled 143,000 pounds. Grants in 2015 will total more than $420,000.

“The foundation is part of a greater association push to be better Citizens of the World and is inspired and guided by the generosity of our association members, most of whom are already very active in their own communities by donating money, time or product to hunger relief and food recovery,” said (TBD of Specialty Food Association). “From our association offices to the Fancy Food Show and beyond, we aim to reduce, recover and recycle food waste whenever possible and set a good example for the specialty food industry in the process.”

ASAE’s Power of A (association) Awards, the industry’s highest honor, recognize the association community’s valuable contributions on the local, national and global level. The Power of A Awards reward outstanding accomplishments of associations and industry professionals for their efforts to enrich lives, create a competitive workforce, prepare society for the future, drive innovation and make a better world.
